Sorrel leaves often called as Gongura leaves in Andhra Pradesh and ambada in Maharashtra.

Leaves are sour in taste, it comes in two varieties, red and green. Red ones are more sour as compared to green ones. The best varieties are found in Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh.

I am sharing one of the authentic Andhra recipe with preparation details below.

Recipe : Gongura Tomato Niluva Pachadi or Gongura Chutney

This is an authentic Andhra recipe. Full of spices, tastes amazing with ghee rice, paratha, I even love it with Pakoras.. It’s rich is Iron too.


For preparing spices:
– 2 tbsp oil
– 1 tbsp dhania/coriander seeds
– 1 medium size bowl red dried chillies
– 1 tbsp of jeera/cumin seeds
– 1 tsp methi/fenugreek seeds
– 2 medium bulbs of garlic

Preparation :
Add 2 tbsp oil in pan, add all the above spices and saute well ( except garlic)  Transfer the spice to grinder jar add the garlic cloves and grind.

For frying gongura leaves:
– 2 tbsp oil
– 300 gms gongura leaves
– 2 medium sized tomatoes
– salt to taste


Fry gongura leaves with all the above  ingredients till it changes color. Add the grinded powder, and saute well till it starts leaving oil.

For tampering:
– 1 tbsp oil
– 1 tsp sarson/mustard seeds
– 7-8 crushed garlic
– 1 tsp chana dal
– 10-15 curry leaves
– 1 tsp Ural dal
– 1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
– 4-5 dried red chilli

Heat oil and add all the above ingredients for tampering. Add this is to the gongura mixture and its ready to serve.

Can be stored outside fridge for 20 days and if you want to store it for more days transfer it to fridge.
